It's In the Can Program
It’s in The Can is a coin collection program, whose proceeds are donated to the Young Singers Foundation, the official charity of Sweet Adelines International. It is intended to be used primarily at weekly rehearsals; it alsocan be used at chapter shows and regional events. The essence of the program is to encourage individuals to deposit small bills or spare change into a specially marked canister, can or box. Periodically, (at least quarterly) the donations are deposited into the chapter’s/region’s treasury and a check for the same amount is sent to international headquarters, Attn: Keesha Cashmore, Foundation Assistant.

1. Chapter leaders should select one member to manage the program.

2. Chapter leaders should decide if the canister will be passed weekly, biweekly, or monthly.

3. Set aside time for the manager to launch the campaign at rehearsal by announcing program’s purpose, describe its potential impact, and emphasize the chapter’ commitment to regularly passing the canister.

4. Set out the canister every week, regardless of whether or not it will be passed along the risers, to create member recognition of the It’s in The Can program.

5. Include a one-sentence reminder in each chapter newsletter, e-mail, or on the chapter’ Web site. Suggested language, “Share your spare change with the Young Singers Foundation. Put it in the can.”

6. At least quarterly, announce the amount of money that the chapter has contributed to the Young Singers Foundation. This can be accompanied by a brief testimonial delivered by any member of the chapter who is personally aware of a positive outcome funded by the Foundation.

7. It is the responsibility of the chapter to keep track of the funds raised with the It’s In the Can campaign. Funds should be sent to headquarters at least quarterly.

8. It is the chapter’s responsibility to notify Foundation Assistant Keesha Cashmore at international headquarters when medalist status has been
reached, according to their records.

On an annual basis:
  • Chapters that raise the equivalent of at least $20 per member from 100 percent of its members on record at international headquarters will be named Foundation Gold Medalists.
  • Chapters that raise the equivalent of at least $20 per member from 80 percent of their members on record at headquarters will be named
  • Foundation Silver Medalists.
  • Chapters that raise the equivalent of at least $20 per member from 70 percent of their members on record at headquarters will be named
  • Foundation Bronze Medalists.
The names of all Foundation Gold Medalists, Foundation Silver Medalists, and Foundation Bronze Medalists will be acknowledged on the Foundation’s Web site, in The Champion, the Foundation’s semi-annual electronic newsletter, and in the Foundation’s pages of The Pitch Pipe.
